Don’t wait until retirement, enjoy your life now

If you’re in midlife and find yourself dreaming of retirement more than enjoying your current life, you’re not alone. Many of us around the ages of 45-55 feel overwhelmed by all of our responsibilities, are tired of going to the same job day in and day out, and struggle with the “blahs.”

It’s no wonder we’re always saying, “I can’t wait to retire.”

When we’re just going through the motions, life can seem uneventful and boring. We can get into a rut and think “same shit, different day.”

But what if you didn’t have to wait until retirement to enjoy your life? What if you could find joy and fulfillment right NOW? What if you could really love the life you’re currently living?

You can, and it starts with some simple practices that can transform your mindset and your life.

Here are 4 things you can start doing today that are proven to increase happiness and bring a sense of peace to your life.

1 – Embrace Gratitude

One of the most powerful ways to shift your focus from dreaming of the future to loving your life now is through gratitude. Gratitude helps you appreciate what you have instead of fixating on what you lack. This shift in perspective can significantly enhance your day-to-day experience, making each moment more fulfilling.

The more you focus on the positive or good things in your life, the more that your brain will start to notice these things. And, you will also begin to see more opportunities to bring happiness and fulfillment into your life.

Simple Practice: Start a gratitude journal. Each morning or evening, write down three things you’re grateful for. They can be little things, like a delicious cup of coffee or something significant like a supportive partner.

Over time, this practice (or any gratitude practice) trains your brain to look for the positive, making you happier and more content. When you focus on what you’re thankful for, you develop a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity.

2 – Practice Meditation

Meditation is a fantastic tool for grounding yourself in the present moment. It helps reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve overall well-being. Headspace.com reports that “people start meditating to manage stress, reduce anxiety, and to cultivate peace of mind. But there are thousands of studies documenting other less-known mindfulness meditation benefits, which can have a positive impact on mental, physical, and emotional health.”

And, if something can have such a significant impact, it’s a no brainer!

By meditating, you can learn to savor the present and stop thinking so much about the future. Meditation also enhances your ability to cope with the stuff that life throws at you, improving your resilience and your ability to bounce back.

Simple Practice: Begin with just five minutes a day. Find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breathing. There are plenty of guided meditations available online if you need help getting started. Apps like Insight Timer, Headspace or Calm offer excellent resources for all meditators, whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been practicing.

3 – Start Journaling

Journaling is another excellent way to connect with your inner self and process your thoughts and emotions. It can be a therapeutic practice that helps you understand yourself better and find clarity in your life. Writing regularly allows you to reflect on your experiences, gain insights, and make sense of emotions. (Add in your daily gratitude practice and you’ll get “two for the price of one!”)

Simple Practice: Set aside 5-10 minutes each day to write freely. Don’t worry about grammar or punctuation; just let your thoughts flow. You can write about your day, your dreams, your fears, or anything else on your mind. This practice can help you uncover patterns in your thinking and identify areas where you can make positive changes. By journaling, you create a safe space to explore your inner world and cultivate self-awareness.

4 – Show Yourself Compassion

Self-compassion is about treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a good friend. It’s easy to be critical of yourself, especially when you’re juggling many responsibilities, don’t feel like you’re doing enough, or think you should be further along in some aspect of your life.

But being kind to yourself can significantly impact your happiness and well-being. By practicing self-compassion, you acknowledge your humanity and accept your imperfections.

Simple Practice: When you catch yourself being self-critical, pause and reframe your thoughts. Instead of saying, “I’m such a failure,” try, “I’m doing my best, and it’s okay to make mistakes.” Remember, you are human! Speak to yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would to someone you love.

In addition to these core practices, incorporating other simple, mindful activities into your daily routine can help you stay present and enjoy life more fully. You definitely won’t have to wait until retirement to enjoy life.

These activities can be seamlessly integrated into your day, enhancing your overall sense of well-being.
